LOCAL ISSUES

CAMPAIGNING FOR POST OFFICES

One of the issues that I know concerns my constituents greatly is the closure of Post Offices and I have been campaigning for some time on their behalf.

Following the publication of the Network Change Programme Area Plan Proposal for Post Offices in Dorset, I have made representations to the Post Office.  I am particularly unhappy about the Post Office’s proposal to close their branch at 7 Ashridge Parade, Wimborne Road.  My concerns are that the elderly population in this area constitutes 25% and the child population 20% and the proposed alternatives to this branch are very unsatisfactory.

The nearest alternative is 0.7 miles away (at 1518 Wimborne Road) and the nearest bus stop to this branch is 275 yards away with buses running only every 20 minutes.  I feel that this is a very long walk for elderly people.  Similarly, the nearest car park is 165 yards away for those who are still able to drive.

The next alternative is the branch in New Parade, Hillview Road, which is 0.8 miles away.  There is no direct bus service available and the terrain between the branches is, in the words of the report, ‘varied’.

I am, therefore, urging the Post Office to reconsider their proposals for this branch.  I have has also written to the Post Offices concerned asking them to send me their own representations.

I recently met with local residents at Kinson Post Office to discuss their concerns.
