BOURNEMOUTH WEST M.P. QUESTIONS HOME SECRETARY ON REGISTRATION OF CRIMINALS CONVICTED ABROAD
Bournemouth West M.P., Sir John Butterfill, is most concerned that persons convicted abroad of serious offences such as child abuse, rape, serious assaults etc. are not yet automatically put on U.K. police computers.
In his statement today (10 January, 2007), the Home Secretary said that the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) had been given the task of co-ordinating this work. However, John questioned the Minister on whether ACPO had been given sufficient resources to undertake such an onerous task.
The Home Secretary replied that he was in the process of discussions with ACPO regarding the funding for their work which seems to have proved far more arduous than was originally anticipated. John stated: ‘It seems to me absolutely vital that the police be given sufficient resources to speed up this very important work so as to protect the British public from murderers, rapists and child abusers convicted abroad.
